Mr. Crumbs was born and raised on the East Coast, home of the iconic foldable and rather large pizza slice. You know the kind that is perfectly slathered with an oh-so-aromatic and slightly sweet pizza sauce? YUM!

After moving to Texas, when we were first married, we started looking for a pizza that could stand up to that pizza from the East Coast…

And after years of trying various pizza shops in three states, we opted to make our own East Cost style pizza. After plenty of trial and error, we ended up perfecting our Pizza Dough Recipe, and the easiest and best pizza sauce recipe was born!

PIZZA TOMATO SAUCE RECIPE INGREDIENTS

You only need four pantry staples for this easy pizza sauce recipe.

  • Whole peeled Italian tomatoes
  • Fresh basil leaves, OR dried basil
  • Sea Salt
  • Ground black pepper

Note: Some people like to add other spices like dried oregano, onion powder, fresh garlic or garlic powder, red pepper flakes, grated Parmesan cheese, or olive oil to their pizza sauce.

All of these spices and flavors sound amazing, but for this pizza tomato sauce recipe, we prefer to let the natural flavor of the tomatoes shine through. YUM!

TOMATO SAUCE FOR PIZZA RECIPE

So what type of tomatoes are best for homemade pizza sauce?

When it comes to pizza sauce, you want whole, peeled Italian tomatoes (I like this San Marzano Tomatoes brand). Canned whole tomatoes are naturally sweeter since they don’t have to withstand as many steps in the manufacturing process. The ones from Italy are sweeter still, with the amazing soil and climate available in the area.

The store-bought canned tomatoes that are diced, stewed, pureed, or crushed tomatoes tend to take a huge beating in the canning process. Those tomatoes are bred for that beating, so they’re not as flavorful. (I LOVE Jovial brand diced tomatoes for most other uses like 15 Minute Spaghetti Sauce!)

Should I use canned or fresh tomatoes for pizza sauce?

In reality, you can use any tomato you want to make this tomato sauce for pizza recipe. However, jarred whole peeled Italian tomatoes will always taste the best (unless, of course, they’re from your garden!). Which of course you can do with my Homemade Canned Tomatoes Recipe!

If you substitute a different tomato, be sure to avoid tomatoes that have added water since that will make your sauce runny.

Try to avoid added citric acid or salt since both of those alter the flavor of the original tomato as well.

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST PIZZA SAUCE RECIPE

In literally 5 minutes, from start to finish, you’ll have a delicious and flavorful sauce to go with your Homemade Pizza Dough.

Step 1. In a blender, combine tomatoes, basil, salt and pepper.

Step 2. Blend on low for 15-30 seconds, or until ingredients are blended well.

It’s so easy! There’s no need to simmer the sauce or cook it down at all. That’s what makes this the best recipe for pizza sauce.

If your blender isn’t up for the job, you can use a food processor or immersion blender.

Store leftover pizza sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. I personally like to make a double batch and freeze the extra in small jars so I can just pull one out to thaw for an easy pizza night! You can freeze pizza sauce for up to 4 months.

PIZZASAUCE RECIPE FAQS

What is the difference between pizza sauce and spaghetti sauce?

Pizza sauce has a sweeter, zestier, and sometimes spicier flavor. Spaghetti sauce and pasta sauce are usually slow-simmered and thinner than pizza sauce.

Is pizza sauce just marinara?

Not quite. Pizza sauce is usually a little bit thicker than marinara, and marinara generally has extra ingredients added for flavor, like ground meat, onions, and minced garlic.

What kind of sauce do you use to make the pizzasauce recipe?

I actually don’t use tomato sauce or tomato paste for this pizza sauce recipe. I use whole, peeled tomatoes because they’re naturally sweeter and the flavor really shines.
