This delicious detox smoothie combines creamy kefir or yogurt with berries, fresh spinach, lemon, ginger, and bentonite clay that easily blends in for a yummy way to help reset your body.
Each year, as the holiday season ends and the New Year begins, I look forward to spring. I start thinking about cleaning my home and detoxing my body.
Your body naturally wants to clear out the things that aren’t beneficial to your health, and eating simple real food supports you in doing that, but it can sometimes be helpful to give yourself a bit of a boost.
When it comes to detoxifying the body, the first ingredient I think of is bentonite clay.
Long-time readers will remember that we’ve been using bentonite clay (we use Redmond clay) for several years now in our Homemade Toothpaste Recipe. We attribute my husband overcoming gum disease and my having a healthy check-up after not seeing the dentist for 2 years to Redmond Clay.
For us, bentonite clay has been incredibly helpful for our overall wellness!
SMOOTHIES FOR DETOX
Redmond Clay is 100% natural bentonite clay. They don’t add anything to it or take anything away and up until now, we’ve only used bentonite clay externally. However, it works to detoxify the body internally (like in smoothies for detox) in 3 remarkable ways:
Adsorption. Because of the chemical composition, it bonds with toxins and holds together with them until both are eliminated from the body.
Absorption. Similarly, bentonite clay absorbs bacteria in the gut, allowing the body to rid itself of potentially harmful cells.
Balancing pH. Bentonite clay is alkaline (it has a higher pH, which means it is more basic rather than acidic), which can help neutralize problems caused by extra acidity, like heartburn and acid reflux.
BENTONITE CLAY IN DETOX SMOOTHIES
My absolute favorite way to detox is to incorporate fruits and vegetables known to detox the body into a delicious smoothie (made without protein powder!) and include the clay.
Not only do smoothies taste really good (so good that I wrote a whole book about them), but I love knowing I’m getting the benefits of fresh produce AND bentonite clay all at the same time.
Plus, it’s something I know my husband will drink, and I can make a smaller batch of detox smoothies for my kids too and they won’t even know it has clay in it.
GREEN DETOX SMOOTHIE RECIPE INGREDIENTS
You will absolutely love this detox smoothie recipe.
Depending on what you have on hand, you can always use either fresh or frozen fruits and veggies. Some people also like to add chia seeds for added fiber.
HOW TO MAKE A BENTONITE CLAY DETOX SHAKE
Combine the detox shake ingredients in the order listed in a blender and process until smooth.
That’s it!
If you would like to start with less clay in your detox smoothie, or you’re making the smoothie for a child, you can start with as little as ¼ teaspoon of clay and gradually increase the amount.
DETOX SMOOTHIE CLEANSE TIPS
This recipe makes one smoothie. Feel free to double, triple, or quadruple as desired. Remember:
- Redmond Clay is pretty powerful and when you first begin a detox smoothie cleanse, you might experience adverse detoxification side effects like headaches, nausea, fatigue, or extreme energy and body aches.
- The key is to take it slowly by incorporating clay internally just once a week and drinking lots of water. It’s safe to take Redmond Clay internally on a daily basis, but every person is different, so listen to your body when it comes to increasing or decreasing the frequency.
- Using bentonite clay (we use Redmond Clay) internally to naturally detox can be a great baby step to take in the new year!
Note: I get asked all the time about the warning label on Redmond Clay. If you’ve ever wondered about Proposition 65, or lead warnings on Redmond Clay, look at this information!

MORE OPTIONS FOR BENTONITE CLAY INTERNAL DETOX
1. TAKE A PILL
One of the easiest ways to use bentonite internally is to take a capsule. It’s super convenient and you don’t have to worry about the taste of the clay as you would with other methods.
My only issue with this option is that I normally don’t keep bentonite clay capsules at home.
2. DRINK WATER MIXED WITH BENTONITE CLAY
This is another easy way to use bentonite clay to detox internally. But after trying this myself, I can’t say it’s something I’m willing to do regularly. Why?
It doesn’t taste very good.
I can usually turn a blind eye to the taste of something if I know it’s for a good reason (like the idea of adding liver to my smoothie), and I’ve been brushing my teeth with bentonite clay without any of the optional essential oil flavors – ever since we lived in a one-bedroom apartment for a few months.
Despite these things, I seriously considered ditching the glass of clay and water about halfway through, which means it likely won’t be something I’ll be doing in the future.
I also tried adding 1 teaspoon of clay to an 8 oz glass of water, stirring it, and allowing the clay to settle before drinking the water. While it’s more palatable than the first option, it’s still not something I’d be excited to drink every day.
So I think I’ll stick with this detox smoothie instead!

CLEANSE AND DETOX SMOOTHIE FAQS
Is a smoothie detox good for you?
Can you use bentonite clay in a blender with metal blades?
Since bentonite clay absorbs toxins and metals, you are not supposed to store it in a metal container. Considering how little clay is used in this recipe and the short time it will touch the blades, it should be fine to mix this detox smoothie using a blender with metal blades.
When should I drink a detox smoothie?
I typically make a smoothie for breakfast almost every day, and I include clay about once a week. Start slowly and drink plenty of water to help your body adjust.
